Rachel and I went to a new cafe to do market research. As I job hunt, I'm also looking into what it takes to open a cafe...A dream I've had for some time. One with a Japanese element. Just thinking...At this cafe they serve ochazuke (rice with green tea poured over it with seasoning added - usually a quick late night snack) and matcha soy shakes. I want to offer desserts and drinks with high quality matcha...

Hey Mie,
I'm sure you have but just in case you haven't... have you gone to Country Station in the mission on Mission?
If you're thinking of doing a cafe with a Japanese twist my vote would be a big fat resounding yes!
I like Country Station for it's funkiness in the Japanese-ish catagory, sometimes the food isn't the greatest but the ambiance I like.
I worked at Ace Wasabi's in the Marina and I like the idea of a music oriented place plus Japanese food/theme but maybe minus such a huge prepster factor and add dj's!
There are loads of places kind of like this but not really with the Country Station feel that totally get it all going on!

Hi,
Thanks for the input. I definitely know country station...actually just yesterday went to dinner a few doors next door at Minako...another great place. Organic homemade Japanese food run by a mom and daughter. A little more delicate and the sauces clearly are well thought out. Yes, SF has an appetite for things Japanese. It'd be cool if I get this cafe going...I could post ideas and get feedback from readers to incorporate a real community feel!

Country Station is my favorite sushi place in San Francisco! I love the music they play there too (often indie-rock stuff). The couple who owns it are butoh dancers and have performed before with Crash Worship (an ancestor of the Extra Action Marching Band). And I see a lot of the employees at the outdoor trance parties held around Northern California. A lot of hipster-cred at that place.

Extra Action yumyumyummy!
Hey you know one thing that I think is very good about Country Station how everybody takes off and goes to festivals or whatever and they just close the shop. You go and it's shut cause they're livin' and lookin' and not just grinding their noses. I vote that is a good element for upcoming cafes of people who have recently moved to SF from Tokyo... ya.
