So I had a birthday last week. I'm not into big parties or anything, but certainly do enjoy the super sweet things friends and family do to note the occasion. And this year, well, was a special birthday as I hit a new decade. Being a mom helps with this transition since having a kid certainly shifts priorities, and I've been getting used to thinking differently, maturing so to speak. I didn't think much of this birthday, but it was important, in the end, to feel appreciated for how far I've come.
And very fittingly, since I love food, I got 3 very luxurious meals, the kind that inspires me and makes me feel lucky to eat such food. First was Commis, just me and Dav. I don't have the foodie knowledge to do justice in explaining what we ate, but it was very elegant. We got wine pairing for each dish so we really enjoyed the fully intended experience.

Above is my fresh sardine appetizer. And game hen that I don't know how they prepared it since the texture was so unique as if they boiled it, treated it, and reshaped it. I meant to get the menu to note the details, but forgot to get it by the end when I was fully satiated...
I usually don't go for desserts but at Commis, I was pleased I did.
Chocolate cake with matcha ice cream, with a bunch of other elements. I
wish I had noted all the details since the dishes were intricate...
Next up, sweet Elida took me to Panam on Market/Castro. We have a tradition of going to French bistro's together. We shared every dish, and splurged on lobster. Both of our desserts were visually fancy; too bad I didn't quite get the pic right. The restaurant had a hip deco design (reminding me of some Tokyo places), and we got a nice private table that was perfect for catching up. I hadn't been out dancing for quite some time, so afterwards we went to Yerba Buena where the People were putting on an event. Everyone there was there for the music and dancing. No pick up scene or whatever. Ages ranged from teens to 50+, and it was free. Such a good vibe. And some really amazing dancers there!
Then last night was with Regenbogens. They took both Dav and I out to Chez Spencer. I loved the dark intimate atmosphere, but it was too dark to get any photos except for this blurry one at the end of the meal. All I can say was that it was incredibly special for me for them to do this for us. I had a perfect duck with berry sauce, one of my favorite combinations. We spend a lot of time with the Regenbogens but going out fancy like this, for my occasion, rocked!
After dinner we stopped by Project 1, right in our neighborhood. There was some really cool art pieces there. The left pic below is of a cawing giant crow eating a human form. Wild and weird (and not my style), but totally grabbed attention. This space also had a dancing area, and a DJ from the Deep End (BM camp) was playing. We had a great time dancing, but I also liked how the art was right there to enjoy too. I particularly appreciated that the place was by our house since at times, I pine for more outdoor space for Tesla. But when I see what we get for living right in the city, I am reminded it is worth it.
And thanks to my mom, I now have a beautiful modern calligraphy piece in the house - the character is wind - 風. A surprise from sweet Rachel was little red riding hood riding the wolf! Rachel has the same one so we can enjoy it together (we like that connection since she's far away)
I also got a whimsical bag from my bro & fam. This bag was made in Nepal, purchased in Helsinki, and will now be used in San Francisco! And last but not least, I have a luxurious gift card for custom pottery from the Regenbogens. I have the glaze picked out; still thinking about what sort of dish I want. This is a gift I will use a lot, and keep for years, each time remembering this transitional time in my life.
Since I didn't put much weight into this particular birthday, I am touched at how meaningful it turned out for me...totally thanks to friends and fam. Mwa mwa mwa!
