For me, this is a huge milestone. Today, my catheter (pee bag contraption) was removed with success. Tadaaaaa!
I can't believe I am putting this on my public blog, but after what I've been through, this is a memorable moment for me, so it's important.
I tried not to complain too much, and focused on the lucky side, but having that darn thing was not very fun. I even learned fear from feeling a slight pain if the thing got tugged, and lately as my bladder started rejecting it once it was healing, well, that got uncomfortable for sure. I had bad visions of the thing ripping out by mistake (which has happened to other poor souls).
Gran Marie kindly joined me so she could care for Aila as I didn't know what exactly would happen at the appointment. My beloved nurse Una, for whom I feel deep gratitude for how personable and caring she has been, told me she would fill my bladder to test it, deflate the internal balloon, then, um, yank it out....exactly what I didn't want. I was almost ready to go under to have it done since I've obsessed about how it would get out. I wimpered "no" ...then actually shed a few tears when she said, "You'll be fine hon, just breathe in on the count of 2, and breathe out on 3 when I pull it out."
Gulp. Through my tears I followed instructions, and she was right! I was fine. All in my head. Whew. Gran Marie got to see all this of course...
My bladder is not quite 100%, but I already see a difference within 10 hours. Human bodies are pretty awesome. If I had this experience at a younger age, I'd probably try to become a nurse. Now that I am better, me, Dav, Tesla, and Aila plan to make a visit to the matenity ward to say thank you for all they have done.
